Math Kerning

When left to its own devices, TeX produces output that is superior to much of what previously passed for acceptable mathematical typesetting. However, there remain a large number of cases where TeX’s output exhibits intercharacter spacing that violates TeX’s own rules!

We have devised a complex search-&-replace routine that is run on every chapter’s source file. This routine incorporates every needed adjustment discovered in the process of proofreading (and so is updated almost continuously).

The result is that our mathematical typesetting exhibits none of the unattractive vagaries that plague the unadjusted output of wholly automated systems—principally, letters smashing into (or spaced too far from) each other.

The file kerning.pdf shows examples of raw versus adjusted math type.
